Just finished reading the new DeepMind scaling paper. Their claim about emergent reasoning at 10B params is wild.
I'm skeptical. The eval benchmarks they used are basically glorified pattern matching. We need better evals before we call anything ‘reasoning.’
Agreed on evals, but look at Figure 7 — the loss curves diverge cleanly at that threshold. That’s not nothing.
Exactly. Whether it’s ‘reasoning’ is semantic. The capability jump is real.
