When your protagonist refuses to do what the plot needs

I've been wrestling with a character who keeps making choices that derail my carefully constructed plot, and I'm starting to wonder if the problem isn't her stubbornness but my attachment to an outline that no longer serves the story. How do you know when to follow the character into uncharted territory versus when to rein them back in?
